About Pakistan Rangers |
The Pakistan Rangers are a paramilitary federal law enforcement group in Pakistan that is led by Pakistan's Interior Secretary. Their primary mission is to secure and defend key sites throughout the country, but they are also frequently involved in major internal and external security operations with the regular Pakistani military, as well as assisting municipal and provincial police forces in the fight against crime, terrorism, and unrest.
The Pakistan Rangers Punjab and Pakistan Rangers Sindh
(colloquially known as the Punjab Rangers and Sindh Rangers, respectively) are
umbrella terms for the Pakistan Rangers Punjab and Pakistan Rangers Sindh, with
the former headquartered in Lahore, Punjab, and the latter headquartered in
Karachi, Sindh—the two provinces of Pakistan in which each force has
operational jurisdiction.
As a result, the Pakistan Rangers are in charge of guarding Pakistan's international border with India; the Punjab Rangers patrol 1,300 kilometres (810 miles) of the border that runs through Pakistan's Punjab province, while the Sindh Rangers patrol the remaining 912 kilometres (567 miles) that runs through Pakistan's Sindh province. The two units are led by separate command structures and wear different uniforms.
The Punjab Rangers, together with their Indian counterparts
in the Border Security Force, perform an elaborate flag lowering ritual at the
Wagah-Attari border crossing near Lahore every evening.
The undisputed international boundary between India and Pakistan is distinct
from the disputed and heavily militarised Line of Control (LoC), which runs
between the Pakistani state of Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir (a border dispute
between India and Pakistan). As a result, the LoC is managed by the Pakistan
Army rather than the paramilitary Punjab Rangers.
Rangers are technically supervised by Pakistan's federal Ministry of Interior's Special Security Unit, which is part of the National Crises Management Cell. They can, however, be commanded by Pakistani Army officers on secondment. The Rangers have well over 100,000 active personnel as of 2017, according to the British International Institute for Strategic Studies.
The Rangers, as members of the paramilitary Civil Armed Forces, may be subject to complete operational supervision of the Pakistan Armed Forces. This is true not only in a wartime scenario, but also when Article 245 of Pakistan's Constitution is invoked to provide "military aid to civil power." In 2013, Karachi, Pakistan's most populous city, was ranked as the world's sixth most dangerous city due to widespread violence perpetrated by criminals, corrupt political agents, and Islamist militants (whose presence was a result of the Soviet–Afghan War and Pakistan's 1980s intake of millions of Afghan refugees).
